Tips for taking your own biometric photos

Follow these steps to get the best results

Distance from the camera while taking a passport photo

Mind the distance

Pose 4–6 feet (1–2 meters) from the camera. Use a timer to take your photo or have someone snap it for you.

passport photo posture: Straight ahead

Face the camera directly

Keep your head straight. Avoid tilting your body or looking away. Remember: portrait mode is not suitable for any ID photos.

Passport photo lighting

Ensure good lighting

Take your photos in daylight e.g., next to a bright window. Shadows on your face or in the background are not allowed.

Traveling to India: visa photo requirements

A visa application process is incomplete without a face photograph. According to the photo requirements provided by VFS Global, your Indian visa photo must:

  • Measure 2x2 inches (51x51 millimeters)
  • Have plain white or off-white background
  • Show the applicant’s head and face fully visible with your eyes open and mouth closed
  • Reflect your natural, current appearance
  • Be taken within 6 months from the date of your visa application

Avoid head coverings (unless for religious reasons) and distracting shadows. Ensure good light and photo’s quality—your visa photograph cannot be altered by any photo editing software.

India visa application: photo requirements for infants

Indian visa photograph requirements for children and adults are roughly the same. To make the parents’ lives easier, the government recognizes it might be challenging to take your baby’s Indian visa picture. That is why some regulations are more relaxed for kids of specific age groups.

  • Infants under one year can keep their eyes closed
  • Small babies under 5 years can have an unnatural facial expression

In general, for minors under 10, some image parameters can deviate from official requirements, like the head’s height or the line of sight. And yet, parents must remember that:

  • A child should be the only person in the picture
  • There cannot be any toys or chairs in the background
  • The child must look directly at the camera (if possible), showing a frontal view of their face
  • A child’s Indian visa photo must be of high quality

How to upload a photo for Indian eVisa

Since 2014, applicants can obtain their Indian visas online. To do this, they must complete an online visa application through a government website or a third-party portal.

First, you must complete the form with your personal details and travel document information.

Note: To apply for a visa online, your passport must have a validity of at least 6 months after you complete the application form.

After that, you will see a “Photo Upload” section. To ensure your digital Indian visa photo gets accepted, it must meet the requirements presented in the table below.

By clicking the “Upload Image” button at the bottom of the page, you can easily submit your visa picture from your computer. You will also see the instructions about the photograph, and the system will ask you multiple times to confirm that you want to upload the image. That way, you can ensure your Indian visa picture follows all requirements.

You can also save yourself some hassle and be 100% confident about your digital photo Indian visa online application. Just use our visa photo maker, snap the picture comfortably at home, and get a perfect image in just 3 minutes.

What is the difference between a US visa photo and India visa photo?

There are no significant differences between the US and Indian visa photo requirements. Both have the same size, background color, and quality regulations.

The only difference includes wearing glasses. While the US State Department allows applicants to wear glasses only for medical reasons, individuals applying for an Indian visa photograph can wear them in all circumstances. They must only ensure that the glasses or the frames do not cover the applicant’s eyes or any facial features.

Where to get an Indian visa photo taken

Applicants for the Indian visa can use the services of any professional photographer, or visit a photo booth, provided that the system database includes the requirements of an Indian visa photo.

In the US, you can easily take your visa photo in the nearest drugstore, retail store, or post office. Make sure to inform the employee about the type of photo you want to receive. These locations may not be the best choice if you opt for an online submission, though. Few places offer a soft copy of your Indian visa photo.

But, you can also stop worrying about a specific photo-taking location and use our visa photo tool to take a perfect picture. It works on Android and iOS systems, so the only thing you need is your smartphone. Take your Indian visa photo wherever you are—we will take care of the rest!
